ORIENTAL RUG CLEANING
Why Handwoven Rugs Need Professional Cleaning

Handwoven and Oriental rugs are excellent at hiding dirt—even when they appear clean. Over time, dry soil settles deep into the rug’s foundation, far beyond the reach of household vacuums or standard in-home cleaning.

To properly clean these rugs, dry soil must be removed before washing begins. This requires specialized equipment and techniques only found in a dedicated in-plant rug cleaning facility—not with steam cleaners or carpet cleaning tools designed for wall-to-wall carpet.

At Renaissance Rug Cleaning, we understand fiber structure, dye stability, and traditional weaving techniques. Our workshop is purpose-built for the safe, thorough cleaning of fine rugs, ensuring your investment is protected and your rug is restored to its full beauty.

Our oriental rug cleaning starts with dry soil removal, or rug dusting, as we call it, to remove dry sandy/silt-like soiling.

Why Washing Matters After Dusting
Even after dry soil is removed through thorough dusting, rugs often still contain deeply embedded residues—such as oils, proteins, and sugars—that can’t be eliminated without proper washing.
These substances require a balanced cleaning solution and a comprehensive wash process to be safely and effectively removed.
Unfortunately, many cleaning services skip or rush the dry soil removal stage, and in-home cleaning methods don’t address it at all. This oversight leaves behind contaminants that continue to degrade the rug’s fibers over time.
Our Rug Cleaning Process
We provide true in-plant rug cleaning in our Portland facility. This process ensures your rug is thoroughly cleaned, dry, and safely handled, and restored to its best condition.

1. Pre-Wash Assessment
We examine each rug to identify fiber type, weave style, age, colorfastness, and any damage or concerns before cleaning begins.

2. Dusting & Dry Soil Removal
Using rug-specific equipment, we remove dry soils, sand, and grit that vacuuming alone can’t reach.

3. Immersive Hand Washing
We gently wash each rug by hand with biodegradable, wool-safe solutions, ensuring colors remain stable and natural fibers are protected.

4. Thorough Rinsing & Drying
Rugs are rinsed and dried in a climate-controlled environment using techniques that protect their integrity and structure.

5. Grooming & Final Inspection
We hand-groom the pile and fringe, inspect for any remaining stains or issues, and package the rug for pickup or delivery.

How We Dry A Rug

All that water with highly absorbent fibers like wool, silk & cotton, how do you get rugs and carpets dry?

As professional rug cleaners, we have a variety of specialized drying equipment. We use a few methods to remove moisture from your wool as quickly as two minutes. By the time your rug reaches our drying tower or floor, we have removed as much as 95% of the mosture from your rug.
All area rugs are tested with moisture meters and given a final post-inspection to ensure they are dry and ready to go back to your home or to our rug repair department.

Pet Urine Removal
We remove pet urine odors and often pet stains from Oriental carpets all the time. Frankly, we’re perplexed that many cleaners make a "big stink" out of removing pet odors and getting rugs clean.
They often charge exorbitant fees and hoopla for upsells for exotic chemical decontamination baths and expensive enzyme treatments.
Our deep cleaning removes the source of the odor deeply hidden in the foundation of your woven rug without pickling your rug in perfumy deodorizers or enzyme cleaners.
Pet urine removal is not impossible, but it does take time and an experienced rug cleaner.
Did we mention that we don't charge extra for pet urine odor removal?
